Nintendo: E3 Conference

Well I hope you like Super Smash Bros. because if you don’t then that’s half an hour you’re never getting back. If you do like Smash Bros. however, then this will have been a fully body erotic massage of hype. Before we dive into that though it must be said that they did talk about other things before we dive into the swamp of Smash.

The conference started with some robots doing some fighting against some monsters which I thought was pretty neat. We also got shown that Killer Queen Black will be coming this year, so will Overcooked 2, Dragonball Fighter Z, SNK Heroines Team Tag Frenzy and Octopath Traveller got a confirmed release date of July. We also got a montage of games we already know about, Aces, Crash, Dark Souls and the like were shown off.

Pokémon Lets Go: Evee and Let’s Go: Pikachu got a quick shout. Not much new information, but we were given an incentive to buy the new Pokeball Plus, the legendary Mew is exclusive to those who buy the peripheral. Ah Nintendo, putting paywalls behind content in new and innovative ways since the 90’s.

More importantly though we have a new Mario Party game! Dubbed Super Mario Party (ditching the numbers but didn’t opt for joining the ‘New’ series), the game looks like a return to form for the friendship destroying series. For those of you who are unaware, in the last two entries for the series (not including the 3DS minigame collection) the classic style of players taking turns rolling dice and each going their own way around a board collecting stars, the newest entries stuck all the players in a cart and forced them to travel around together. This bred resentment towards Nintendo similar to how you hated your parents when they made you sit in the middle between your two overweight cousins who had no sense of personal space during long car journeys. Nintendo is seemingly learning lessons significantly faster than in the past (entire WiiU generation anyone), and are making amends, so we are back to the traditional style of gameplay that we all love so much. They also showed off that some minigames would use the motion controls of the Joy-Cons and that multiple consoles could be used together in tabletop mode to play unique minigames like a cart game that used both consoles simultaneously to create an expanded track.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is getting what appears to be an expansion pack. While I haven’t played the game yet I know a lot of people are huge fans so hopefully this will provide some real extra meat to sink your anime teeth into.

Fire Emblem, now knows as Fire Emblem: Three Houses, has been delayed to Spring 2019 unfortunately for some but the gameplay seemed interesting. The Fire Emblem community has reacted positively so we’ll take that as a good sign.

Fortnite has been announced and released on the same day! This has been rumoured for days now so pretty much everyone was expecting it but hey Fortnite is insanely popular right now so hopefully it’ll bring some new players to the Switch!

Hollow Night, proves that the Switch has become the home of Indies and has also been released today!

Quick side note, during the Splatoon 2 tournament, they announced the Octoling expansion pack will be released tomorrow. Nintendo really aren’t wasting time with this.

Now we get onto the majority of the presentation.

SMASH! SMASH! SMASH! SMASH! SMASH! SMASH! SMASH!

Honestly folks my childhood dream just became realised. Remember as a kid you would talk with your friends about games and you would come up with the most ridiculous ideas. “WHAT IF THEY MADE A MARIO KART AND THEY MADE IT SO YOU COULD PLAY AS LINK AND AN ANIMAL CROSSING GUY”. Remember how Nintendo made that happen. Remember how Nintendo feeds off your nostalgia like a vampire in order to stay youthful and beautiful. Well you should because they did it with Smash. The newest title is indeed a new game (some are still calling it a port but at this point I think they’re just looking for a reason to be upset) and it is call Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The main selling point of this title? Everyone is here. Let me say that again. EVERYONE IS HERE. EVERY CHARACTER THAT HAS EVER BEEN IN SMASH BROS IS IN THIS GAME. WHAT. SAKURAI YOU ABSOLUE MADMAN. This means the every character from 64, Melee, Brawl and WiiU/3DS are here. OVER 60 PLAYABLE CHARACTERS. DEAR GOD. We got a lot of indepth information so I’ll give you the shorthand. A lot of minor change have been made to characters, in one way or another nobody will be the same. They have officially embraced the ridiculous nature of clone character like Dark Pit and Lucina. Characters that are direct clones are now referred to as Echo Characters. Doc Mario doesn’t count because he has a different move, but Dark Pit does because he’s exactly the same. They then announced a new Echo Character. Daisy. “HI I’M DAISY” shall be heard forever more on the fields of Smash. All stages now have a Battlefield mode as well as a Final Destination mode. We also got two new characters. Inklings and Ridley. Yea the big dragon thing from Metroid is finally in Smash as a fighter. This beauty will be released 7th December.

As I said, if you don’t like Smash, you won’t like this. If you’re a fan of Smash you might have even gotten tired of it too to be honest. They went into a lot of details, at times it felt more like patch notes than a conference. A little more time and a little more focus on what else is coming this year. We still don’t know enough about their online service, we still don’t know enough about the new Pokemon, we don’t know about Yoshi either. While I’m sure we’ll find out some more in the Treehouse live stream, and we’ll get more information soon, their conference really needed some filling out with announcements. After last year’s amazing conference this has been a bit of a let-down. Worst of all though. Something I cannot forgive. Waluigi is not a playable character in the new Smash Bros. 0/10.

A decent show, with some lacklustre announcements but deserves credit for just how mind-blowing Smash Bros. is and for how much details they presented about the new game. Not Nintendo’s worst year, but not their best. It’ll do for now, but the angry cries of Waluigi, Animal Crossing, Star Fox and F-Zero fans can be heard everywhere, Waaaing for justice. 6/10
