Two Stirling Tennis teams won at home this Wednesday in front of a sizeable crowd, on a big day for the club. With live commentary on Air3 Xtra and a crowd of around 60 cheering them on in the National Tennis Centre, the Women’s 1sts team won their division, and the Mens 3rds won a crucial game to keep them in their league. First up was the Women’s 1sts, playing Strathclyde 1sts, knowing that a win would see them clinch the Scottish 1A title. The singles games finished 2-2, but a good performance in the doubles saw Stirling win the tie 4-2, thus winning Scottish 1A and gaining promotion to the BUCS Premier North. Monica Ponzi was impressive in her straight sets win, and stood out for the Women’s team in their victory. This victory was met by loud cheers from the Stirling crowd, and a fistpump from Tennis President Fraser Hamilton, who co-commentated throughout much of the day on Air3 Xtra. Next up was the Men’s 3rds team, who needed to beat St.Andrew’s 1sts in order to survive relegation from Scottish 1A. Dominant performances in the singles games, including a great effort from Ben Abbott to win a tie-break for the match, put Stirling ahead, and some fantastic doubles play secured the points for Stirling, who remain in Scottish 1A. It is a great effort from Stirling to have three teams in the top two divisions in the country, and it is impressive to see their third team beating the best that other universities have to offer.
