This weekend sees the return of the William Hill Scottish Cup and since it is the fourth round the ‘big’ teams enter at this point. There are 16 ties taking place between Friday 8th and Sunday 10th of January. Here, I’ll go through all the matches and give my predictions on who the likely winners will be and if any upsets are likely to happen. All results in this article will have a winner – I will not be predicting replays!
St Mirren vs Partick Thistle (Friday)
Both sides enter at the fourth round, with Thistle being the favourites for this tie. St Mirren have been struggling all season so far, especially at home. Things could change this week under new boss Alex Rae, but I do not see this happening against a decent Partick side. Partick to win 2-0
Airdrieonians vs Dundee United
Dundee United have to be favourites mainly due to the league differences between the two sides. They are also a professional team against the semi-professional Diamonds. However, with United on a severely poor run and Airdrie hoping to come back to form, this could be the target for the upset of the weekend. Airdrieonians to win 1-0.
Annan Athletic vs Hamilton Academical
Hamilton should win this tie and look to return to some level of form after their derby day draw with Motherwell. Annan have lost their last two games and needed a replay against Inverurie Locos after originally drawing 4-4 with them. Hamilton will be too big a step up and should win. 4-1 Hamilton.
Dumbarton vs Queen of the South
Two wins from their last 10 for Dumbarton and the fact that Queens sit seven points ahead of them in the league mean Queens should be favourites. However, this match will be tight and I think home advantage may pay off. 2-1 Dumbarton.
Dundee vs Falkirk
Last season’s runners up travel to Dens Park in one a match that could well go to a reply. But with Falkirk unbeaten in their last 10 fixtures, this set them up well for the weekend. Mixed form for Dundee despite their recent derby win means this match will be tight. The Bairns to win 3-2.
Dunfermline vs Ross County
League One leaders Dunfermline may struggle against the side 5th in the Scottish Premiership. The Pars will look to play and could possibly win, but I feel the Staggies will run out victors. 2-0 County.
East Kilbride vs Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale
EK go in as favourites. They sit fourth in the Lowland League, compared to Lothian who are in the East of Scotland Super League. East Kilbride to win 3-1
Livingstone vs Morton
An all Championship clash here with ninth playing sixth. Morton came out on top last time and I suspect that they will do again. Both teams have won once in their last five, but I think Morton will steal it. Morton to win 1-0
Motherwell vs Cove Rangers
A resurgent Motherwell take on Highland League opposition, a match that has ‘banana skin’ written all over it for the Steelmen. Cove have lost 3 of their last 5 so are looking to find some stability again. I don’t think they will find it against Motherwell. 4-0 to ‘Well.
Raith Rovers vs Hibernian
Another all Championship clash as fourth face third at Stark’s Park. This match will be close but I believe Hibs will come out victorious in this encounter. Is this the match that leads Hibs on the road to winning their first Scottish Cup since 1902? Probably not. However… Hibs to win 2-1.
St Johnstone vs Kilmarnock
For me the Perth side will come out on top in this clash. This is because, having seen both sides this season and looking at recent form, Killie are lost at sea. Saints are a good shout to win the competition again and will use this match against Killie to push on for a good season. St Johnstone to win 3-0.
Stirling Albion vs Inverness Caledonian Thistle
The Scottish Cup holders look to be too strong for League Two Stirling Albion. Caley Thistle will be looking to retain their silverware and will look to start against the Binos. Inverness to win 2-0.
Hearts vs Aberdeen
The pick of the fourth round ties. Both teams are looking to challenge Celtic this season in the league, but both will also look to add the Scottish Cup to their collections. The Dons have the better form heading into this match but Hearts will look to send a message. I feel Hearts will win 3-1.
Rangers vs Cowdenbeath (Sunday)
In the first of the televised matches the Blue Brazil travel to Ibrox hoping to cause a major upset. However, I don’t see this happening. Rangers are scoring for fun right now and will likely continue this. Rangers to win 4-1.
Stranraer vs Celtic (Sunday)
Stair Park plays host to what could be the biggest giant killing of them all this weekend. But sadly it won’t be. Celtic will just be too strong for the Blues. Celtic to win 3-0.
