Liverpool and Arsenal were the only home teams to win on what was an eventful opening weekend of the 2014/15 Premier League season.
Arsenal needed a late Aaron Ramsey winner to see off Crystal Palace, who dismissed manager Tony Pulis just two days before the start of the season. New signings Alexis Sanchez and Calum Chambers started for the Gunners, who rested the German contingent of their squad, after their World Cup win in Brazil.
Liverpool saw off Southampton 2-1, thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge. Nathaniel Clyne’s powerful effort gave the Saints hope, but it was not enough to grab a point at Anfield.
Louis Van Gaal’s first game in charge of Manchester United was a 2-1 defeat at home to Swansea. Midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung unlocked the Red Devils’ defence on 28 minutes to give the Welsh side the lead, but Wayne Rooney’s acrobatic goal on 53 minutes levelled the game up. However, Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, who had a fantastic game, scored what proved to be the winner on 72 minutes, leaving Van Gaal disappointed by the defeat. Expect signings at Old Trafford in the near future, with defensive reinforcements the priority.
Elsewhere, Man City beat Newcastle 2-0, Chelsea won 3-1 at Burnley, and Hull City, who have spent big this summer, won 1-0 away at newly-promoted QPR. There were also wins for Aston Villa, and Spurs, whilst Leicester City produced a battling performance to draw 2-2 at home to Everton, and West Brom drew 2-2 at home to Sunderland.
