Following the success for British talent on Saturday night, and the fantastic Tony Bellew vs Nathan Cleverly fight, are we in a golden age for British boxing?
Britain currently has 5 world title holders, including Carl Froch, but has plenty of contenders for a world belt. David Haye and Nathan Cleverly have only recently held world title belts, and fighters such as George Groves have fought in a world title fight in 2014.
There is a genuine possibility that, in the next couple of years, we could be seeing some big world title fights involving British boxers soon. Anthony Joshua continues to rise and rise, and his brutal destruction of the experienced Michael Sprott inside 90 seconds was a fine example of his potential, and there is every chance that Joshua will be aiming for a world title soon.
Both George Groves and James DeGale are due world title shots soon. Groves is the mandatory challenger to the WBC belt, whilst DeGale is fighting for the vacant IBF title soon. Should they both win their respective titles, a fight between the two is on the cards, they detest each other and a rivalry that has been strong since amateur boxing is likely to continue.
With such a strong British presence on the world boxing scene, it appears we could be entering a golden age of British boxing.
